GH Holiday Party
January 07, 2009
With everyone being so busy this year, I
took it upon myself to choose a place for
our holiday lunch. One of the first
places that came to mind was Uncommon
ground, but I thought I would do a little
more searching, just to have more
options. I have been to the one in
Edgewater but not to the one in
Wrigleyville. I thought we’d give the one
in Wrigleyville a try since it is closer
to the office.
The week of our party I drove by and saw that it looked tiny. Even though there are multiple rooms, from the street it doesn’t look very big, so I was worried. When we arrived, starving and ready to eat, we were lead to a large back room that was practically all ours. This made me feel better since we were going to need space for our gift exchange. The service was great and so was the food. We had tons of appetizers including their pizzas, hummus, and artichoke dip. We introduced Valerie to their famous sweet potato fries that are out of this world if you haven’t tried them. While looking at the menu I thought for sure I would go with a brunch option but when I laid my eyes on the meatloaf open-faced sandwich, I just couldn’t pass it up. Talk about comfort food. There was a piece of thick white bread with a huge piece of bacon rapped meatloaf smothered in mashed potatoes, spinach, onions and, of course, gravy. It was so good and I had enough to share. I’m one of those people who was born with a second stomach for dessert so I had to try the s’more tart. It was rich and so delicious. The toasted marshmallows were perfect and the chocolate and graham cracker couldn’t be a more faultless couple. I topped all that off with a giant cup of their house blend which made my day.
Everyone seemed very satisfied with their meals and that made me feel good; being the coordinator of the party; I didn’t want anyone to be disappointed. Not only was the food delicious, but you can feel good about what you’re eating. Uncommon ground is a prime example of a sustainable establishment. Most the food they serve is locally grown. The location in Edgewater has a rooftop green house. They serve martinis that are called treetinis and when you order one, a tree is planted. To date they have planted over 4,300 trees! The location in Edgewater also has reminders in the bathrooms to only take what you need in terms of paper towels to dry your hands. They also host numerous events focusing on the green initiative. I would recommend it to anyone, especially if you’re looking for a change. Make it a resolution to support establishments like this.
