Chicago Art Institute Opens a New Wing
May 19, 2009
The Art Institute just opened a new wing
for modern/contemporary art, and in
celebration will be granting free
admission this week only! Now, the Art
Institute is already known as a world
renowned museum and it is sure to become
even better as of this week with all of
the fanfare attributed to the new wing.
Even the wing itself is being hailed as
modern excellence by the New York Times
and other national papers.
The wing was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, and it is revolutionary in the fact that the roof is suspended three feet over a glass ceiling to allow sunlight into areas of the new wing. Among great works from the masters and forefathers of the modern art movement such as Picasso, Dali and Magritte, there will be several important pieces from lesser known artists that have not been shown in public for decades.
I know what you’re thinking… sounds great, but art makes me hungry, where can I get a good meal? Glad you asked. The new wing apart from boasting world class art also boasts world class food. Tony Mantuano, of Spaggia fame, is the head chef at the new restaurant there, Terzo Piano. The menu offers all your favorites like lamb burgers, homemade spaghetti, flatbreads and antipasti. Let’s not forget dessert! Finish off your day as an art seeing foodie with Greek yogurt panna cotta or chocolate semi-freddo with Spanish peanut nougat and salted caramel. Also, take advantage of the semi-enclosed piazza on days like today and make sure you grab a drink from the bar to cool you off.
Could it get any better? It sure can, located just blocks south of Gordon Hanrahan, you can enjoy a day of fine art and fine food then come by here and say hello.
