Happy Halloween!

My absolute favorite holiday is Halloween and when I found out that my boss Mike wanted to throw a Halloween bash, I was elated. Part of the bash included a pumpkin carving contest. Everyone spent the week prior to Halloween trying to decide what to do with their pumpkin. Mum was the word because no one was going to share their idea, being a contest and all.

On Friday, I came in with that excited feeling. Everyone started lining up their pumpkins along the front desk. Some expressed political statements reminding everyone to vote, one displayed the remarkable skyline of Chicago, one had broccoli as hair, one was scary, and many were cute.

There was this one pumpkin that many didn’t visually understand. It was the profile of someone, but no one could decide who. The carving on this pumpkin looked like it had taken hours but Megan, the pumpkin’s creator, said, “It only took about a half an hour”.

We had caramel apples, pumpkin pie, apple pie, apple cider, and of course, Halloween candy. Then it came down to the voting. (We were practicing for November 4th.) The top three pumpkins won a prize. Included in the top three was the pumpkin that looked very elaborate but was hard to see so Megan brought in a candle and showed everyone the full effect of her pumpkin. It was the most amazing pumpkin we had ever seen. It looked like we were looking at a picture of Barack Obama’s face. We all stood around it taking pictures on our cell phones.
First place went to Mike, with his funny face pumpkin that had teeth and black-eyed peas for eyes. Second place went to Megan and her Barack Obama pumpkin, and third place went to Molly with her funny pumpkin that had broccoli hair and gourd nose.

I don’t think Martha Stewart could have done a better job.
